9. Mae Young Gives Birth To A Hand
A WTF moment before the term WTF even existed… what, how and why all immediately spring to mind when you mention to someone that a 77 year old woman give birth to a hand on a wrestling show.
The storyline back in the year 2000, which served almost no creative purpose, was that 77 year old Mae Young was pregnant with the child of 29 year old 450 pound black man Mark Henry. She went into labor on Monday Night Raw… only to deliver a white hand. It’s as ridiculous as it sounds. The WWE hope was clearly for the humour to create some reaction, the shock to get people talking, but the only discussion afterward tended to be down the “this is silly” kind of thread. It wasn’t what we wanted people to see when we tried to convince our friends that watching wrestling was worthwhile. We wanted a product that emphasised great matches, but instead we had a show in which a pensioner gave birth to an implied sex toy.
