WWE: 10 Segments That Made Us Ashamed To Be Wrestling Fans

5. Exploiting Paul Bearer’s Death

When Paul Bearer died on March 5th 2013, it should have been a time of reflection in WWE. The legendary manager of The Undertaker had been a recognisable character in the cartoon era, the attitude era and the modern day. Rather than honour that legacy, WWE decided to exploit it. CM Punk and Paul Heyman mocked Bearer, all in the aid of getting heat.
This was tasteless, CM Punk vs The Undertaker was a match that sold itself, it didn’t need to feed off a dead person to fuel its storyline. WWE felt differently, they contacted Bearer’s family for permission to use his real death in fictional storylines. At the time, the children of Bearer granted this, but have since expressed disappointment with the way WWE exploited the angle.
